The Whitbourne Reredos Restoration project

Whitbourne reredos before restoration

About the Whitbourne Reredos

The reredos (pictured above) is on the east wall of St John the Baptist Church, Whitbourne, in The County of Herefordshire, behind the altar.

The central panel, in pre-raphaelite style, is executed in mosaic and opus sectile and depicts the birth of Jesus Christ. The two large tiled wing panels are executed in Arts and Crafts patterns that contribute to a harmonious whole.

The reredos was built by the firm of James Powell and Sons of Whitefriars, London, and was installed in 1912 in memory of Sir Richard Harington, 11th Baronet.

The Restoration Project

This project, started in September 2006, is to conduct essential repair and restoration to the reredos central and side wing panels.

The project is funded by a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, supplemented by local fundraising activities.

Use the links to the left  to explore these web pages to see what has happened, is happening, and our plans for the future.

School children in particular should visit the Q and A page to submit questions about the project, and see answers to others' questions.
