Report of the Orchard Dig, visited by Whitbourne School children on 27th April 2005.

On 27th April the children of Whitbourne School had a chance to see just what the archaeologists and hard-working excavators had been getting up to in Churchfields. Click on a picture to see a bigger, better version!

The children watched as the first stage of digs in three large sites in the orchard revealed fascinating traces of 18th century industrial occupation.

A "hole" new insight!  Archaeologist Clem Lovell explains, from deep in one of the garden pits, how the different levels of excavation can tell us something about the history of the site.

Orchard Dig at medieval level


Digging deeper into the orchard sites, interesting discoveries were made telling us about the soil during medieval times.  Churchfields obviously has a very interesting history.
